Super Bowl Sunday is the 2nd largest food consumption day for Americans after Thanksgiving, according to the USDA. With barbecue-smothered fried chicken and fries, we’re sure to rack up the calories. So here are some tips for a healthy football eats.

1: Chili: Opt for lean meats–turkey chili is my fave! If you’d prefer beef, opt for beef that’s at least 90% lean. And of course, lots of beans for added protein!

2. Veggie Skewers IMG_1279

Add some color to your Super Bowl party with these vibrant savory treats!

2. Veggie Chips

Use your fave veggies to make home-cooked chips and fries!

3. “Pop-it-Yourself” Popcorn – Instead of buying the salt and butter-smothered popcorn, pop your own kernels and spice it up with your choice herbs or spices. I found that olive oil, rosemary and some salt tastes very well!

4. Homemade Salsa photo (5)Opt for the whole-grain chips, or bake your own pita chips by placing square-cut pita bread into the oven.

5. Sweetly Tangy Fruit SaladIMG_9841

Add some tang to your evening with this grapefruit, strawberry and mint salad.

Drinks:

For drinks, stick with water to save yourself the extra calories. If you must drink alcohol, opt for the lower-calorie beers, such as Guinness Draught, Sam Adams Light Lager or I.C. Light. Or my fave, red wine!

Happy Super Bowl!
