In an effort to find a natural anti-inflammatory remedy for my ongoing sciatica, I was introduced to sorrel, a beautiful red flower that blooms in the spring to mid-summer. (Jamaican sorrel is also referred to as hibiscus sabariffa or roselle.) It has a tangy, acidic taste, and is used in a traditional Caribbean beverage, as well as in soups, stews, jams, pies, and my fave — tea! Here are 5 ways sorrel can get your body feeling good:
- Provides anti-inflammatory effect: Sorrel’s anti-inflammatory properties fights off stubborn pain and swelling by neutralizing free radicals (waste products from chemical reactions that when built up can cause bodily harm)
- Boosts immune system: Sorrel contains flavanoids and vitamins A and C, which help build up our immune system to fight off ugly diseases and protect us from bacterial infections
- Detoxifies the body: As a diuretic, sorrel keeps our kidneys working hard, relieves constipation, and supports our digestive system
- Improves circulation: The iron content works to boost blood cell production and oxygen levels in our essential organs, and keeps our heart healthy
- Lowers blood pressure: research shows 1 cup of sorrel daily helps reduce blood pressure
I tried out my own rendition of a sorrel drink. Give it a try!
